What is the File Size of Kindle Books?

To give you a more accurate estimation of the file size of a typical Kindle eBook, we have checked Amazon’s best-seller list on Kindle eBooks and used two methods of calculations. The first based on averaging and the second based on finding the median. We will also tell you how many Kindle books a device such as a Kindle Paperwhite can store.

Kindle Books File Size – the Basics

A Kindle eBook is a digital file that can be read on a Kindle e-Reader, a Fire tablet or a device that can run the Kindle Reading Apps. It’s just like any files or document you stored in your tablet or PC. Thus, its size is measured in byte or more common in Kilobyte (KB):

  • 1 kilobyte (KB) is around 1,000 bytes
  • 1 megabyte (MB) is around 1,000 KB
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) is around 1,000 MB

You can search for your favorite book in the Kindle store and then proceed to the Product Details section. Once there, look for the “File Size”, and you will find the size of that Kindle book.

Typical Kindle Books File Size and Page Count

To understand how much space a single Kindle eBook uses, we recorded the size of each book in Amazon.com’s Top 100 best-seller paid eBooks and Top 100 best-seller free eBooks on November 10, 2015, and on November 20, 2015. We recorded the eBook size over a 10-day interval to broaden the scope of available data. You can go here if you want to look at the Kindle book file size data that we’ve collected.

We summed up the file size of each Kindle book on the list and then divided by the number of books. We found that the average file size and average number of pages of a single Kindle eBook is 2.6MB and 295 pages respectively. Our calculation can be summarized on the table below:

Average File Size and Page Count of Kindle book

The averaging method works well with most books, but there are a few that skew the results and make average sizing an inaccurate method of calculation. Two of the eBooks on our list were over ten times larger than the average, the largest Kindle eBook being 43MB. Including these books in the calculation made all file sizes much larger.

Because of that variation, we can use another method to calculate the typical size and page count and that’s using the median size. To find the median size, we arranged books in order from smallest size to largest size. The median is the average of the two middle values (the 50th and 51st book size). The median will be a better indicator of the most typical value here than the average as the effect of extra-large or extra-small books is minimized.

We found that the median file size and number of page of a single Kindle eBook is 1.87 MB and 227 pages respectively. Our calculation can be summarized on the table below:

Still, individual eBook sizes can vary widely, and our computed size is just a reference, but this is our best estimate based on all the data we gathered from the most popular books in the Kindle Store.

Number of Books stored in an e-Reader or Tablet

Now that we have an idea of the typical size of a Kindle eBook, the next question is how many Kindle eBooks can we store in a Kindle e-reader?

Since the storage capacity of the different versions of the Kindle e-reader is available, this is simple to determine. Below is the table of our computations that states how many eBooks you can store in a Kindle e-readers based on the median Kindle book file size.

*Amazon upgraded the storage of the Kindle Paperwhite 2 from 2 GB to 4 GB around August 2014, so the current Paperwhite 2 has a bigger storage.

In case you’re choosing between these Kindle e-readers, our following articles should help:

If you are using a different brand of e-reader or a tablet to read your eBooks, you can still use our data to estimate how many books you can store in your device. For example, if you are using the latest Fire 7 tablet from Amazon, it has a usable storage space of 4.5 GB. If you use 4 GB of the space for storing Kindle books, you can divide the 4 GB by the typical Kindle book size (median value as stated above) and you will find that you can store approximately 2,140 eBooks.

One thing to be aware of is that the size of Kindle books has increased over time as Amazon added more features (like the Enhanced Typesetting). In 2012, the typical size of a Kindle eBook was around 1 MB, but now, we found, the typical size has gotten much bigger. This trend shows no indications that it will stop or even slow down, but, as device storage has increased faster than file sizes, future devices should be able to store similar quantity of contents.

There are many factors that contribute to the overall file size of a single eBook but to make it simpler, the more words and images there are, the bigger the file size of an eBook. Among these two factors, the biggest file size contributing factor is the image.

To sum up, we found that the typical size of a Kindle eBook is 1.87 MB. Our computation above should also give you a rough estimate of how much content you can store on a device with a certain storage capacity.
